Please note: Lovys offers two types of home insurance policy, with two current insurance partners (Generali and Wakam). This article applies to both insurers. For more information, please refer to the specific or general terms and conditions of your policy.

1. Is my garage covered by my home insurance?

Your detached garage may be covered under certain conditions.

At WAKAM, a detached garage is considered an outbuilding. Outbuildings, such as garages, sheds, cellars or laundry rooms, are covered as long as they are declared to the insurance company and are not intended for residential use.

At GENERALI, an individual underground garage (closed box) in a building may also be covered if it is declared as an outbuilding.

2. What is an outbuilding for home insurance purposes?

An outbuilding is defined as a building that is separate from the living quarters but connected to the private use of the main dwelling. This could be a garage, cellar, shed or laundry room, as long as these spaces are not intended for habitation. For your garage to be covered, it must be declared to your insurer as an outbuilding.

3. Are garages and parking spaces covered?

At WAKAM, shared garages and parking spaces are not covered. This means that if you have a space in a shared car park, it will not be included in your home insurance policy.

At GENERALI, a shared underground car park (an individual space in a building) may be covered provided that it is declared as an outbuilding, that the space is linked to your home or rented to a private individual, and that it is located within a 5 km radius of the address indicated in your Specific Conditions. Please note: we are not able to add information about the outbuilding (such as the exact address, for example) to your contractual documents, nor can we issue a specific certificate for this outbuilding.

4. What do I have to do to declare my garage or parking space to the insurance company?

To ensure that your garage or parking space is covered by your insurance, you need to declare these spaces as outbuildings when you take out your policy. You will need to provide precise information, such as the location of the garage or car park in relation to your main home, and indicate whether it is an enclosed garage or an open parking space. Be sure to check the specific terms and conditions of your contract.

5.Is it possible to cover an outdoor parking space?

No, outdoor parking spaces, even if they are close to your home, are not generally covered by home insurance, as they do not meet the criteria of ‘dependency’, which requires an enclosed and secure structure.
